About

Explore alternative firing techniques this summer in a special three-part workshop led by local ceramic artist Karen LeBlond! Participants will learn the fundamentals of both Raku and Salt-Saggar firing processes, create work specifically designed for these techniques, and participate in an immersive firing day at Karen’s studio in Westcliffe. About the Workshop The series begins with an introductory class covering the process and aesthetics of both Raku and Salt-Saggar firings. Karen will discuss clay body considerations, forms that work well for these firings, and surface preparation techniques. She will also show terra sigillata and burnishing methods used in Saggar firing. After the introduction class, participants will have approximately three weeks to create their work in the studio. Each participant may fire two Raku pieces and two Salt-Saggar pieces. The second class focuses on glazing and firing preparation. Karen will provide Raku glazes and guide students through application techniques. Salt-Saggar pieces will already be burnished and bisque fired, and students will prepare firing materials and assembly ahead of the firing day. The final session takes place at Karen’s studio in Westcliffe, where participants will take part in both the Raku and Saggar firings. Students should plan for a full-day experience outdoors.
